My partner and are going to Spain in August – I can’t bloody wait! We will start our adventure with a week in Barcelona and then travel the beautiful country for a month.
To enhance our knowledge of Spain, we have decided to sample many Spanish wines and restaurants in Sydney.
At first we were skeptical of Spanish wines because we had become to love world-class French wines (it was becoming a delicious, yet expensive habit) and hoped Spanish wines would of the same standard.

Any doubts we previously had about Spanish wines all went away after trying Palacios Remondo 2012 Placet Valtomelloso Viura at Dear Sainte Éloise. It was unlike any wine I’ve ever had before in my life, the only way I can describe it as is f*&king delicious! What a beautiful drop! Is this is a taste of what’s to come in Spain? If so, I am so excited.
We have continued to purchase any Spanish wines that came into our sight. We have discovered Cava (the Champagne of Spain yet half the price), Viura (my new favourite white wine) and Ribera del Duero (delicious red drop) to name a few.
Balcón by Tapavino was a must try for us to learn more about Spanish cuisine and tapas.
Balcón is a beautiful venue nestled in Bligh Street. It features an intimate bar/ dining area and showcases a fantastic wine display. If you wonder further down you will find a balcony dining setting – perfect for a summer’s evening. That’s where we settled in for our Spanish culinary experience.

A bottle of Coto de Gomariz Ribeiro Blanco "Dende o Seculo X" 2014 was ordered and it went down a treat. I want to try this wine again to compare against my favourite Virua – it would be a close call. With the wine we indulged in Oysters (Sydney Rock) and Jamón Ibérico as our starter. YUM YUM YUM. Fresh oysters and tasty ham, what’s not to love?!
For the main event we ordered the Basque Style Jack’s Creek Black Angus Steak with a side of crispy potatoes and steams beans. 10/10 would recommend!
Our lovely waitress tempted us into dessert – Fresa y Crema and Carolina were our choices for the night. (I can’t look past anything with chocolate and my partner’s weakness is strawberry - so we were in luck). Beautiful, indulgent desserts accompanied by a glass of Sherry was the perfect end to our incredible feast at Balcón by Tapavino.

The Spanish food and wine I have sampled so far is outstanding. It makes me even more excited to experience the ‘real deal’ in Spain.
I’d love to hear your recommendations on travelling around Spain – must see places, venues to eat & drink so please share with me!
But for now, I will continue to sample the goodness of Spain here in Sydney and learn the basic tongue.
Más pronto.
